Abia State House of Assembly gets new Speaker

The Deputy Speaker, Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. Asiforo Okere was Monday confirmed the Speaker after three days he assumed the office in acting capacity.

Former Speaker and current Deputy Governor, Sir Ude Okochukwu , handed over to Okere as the acting Speaker at the eve of his swearing-in last Thursday.

Okere, who represents Ukwa East constituency, took the oath of office administered by the Clerk of the House, Johnpedro Irokansi during the plenary of the House on Monday.

The motion for Okere to become the substantive Speaker was moved by Hon Emeka Ejiogu and seconded by Hon Mezie Nwubani.

Meanwhile, the elevation of Okere necessitated other changes in the principal officers of the House as the former Leader, Hon Chidiebere Nwoke was elevated to the position of he Deputy Speaker.

Former Deputy Leader, Hon Princewill Onyegbu was made the Leader, while former Chief Whip, Hon Ikechukwu Nwabeke was elevated to the position of Deputy Leader.

Hon Mba Ukaha became the new Whip.

In his acceptance speech, Okere commended his predecessor for his quality leadership styles and pledged to sustain the tempo.

The new Speaker also promised to facilitate the passage of the outstanding bills presented to the House.
