Police disperse Niger lawmakers with teargas to stop impeachment proceeding against Gov. Babangida Aliyu

Policemen on Wednesday tear gassed the Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly, Isah Kawu, and 20 other members and staff of the assembly.

The main gate to the assembly complex was blocked with a Hilux van while armed policemen formed human barricade round the complex fence.

The move was part of attempts to stop the lawmakers from commencing impeachment proceeding against Governor Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu.

Irked by the development, the lawmakers tried to break the padlock while the policemen used tear gas to disperse them, thus causing pandemonium in the complex.

The lawmakers led by the new Speaker, Hon. Kawu later left the scene and assured journalists that they will call for a press briefing.

It was also gathered that the new speaker and 20 other members of the assembly eventually left to an undisclosed place for a meeting where they will decide Aliyu’s issue whether or not to impeach him.
