President Jonathan sacks NHIS boss; ...appoints Peter Obi SEC Chairman

Barely one month before handing over power, President Goodluck Jonathan has appointed a former Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, as chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission, SEC.

Mr. Obi’s appointment was contained in a statement released Tuesday by the Special Adviser on Media and Public Affairs to the President, Reuben Abati.

The former governor had defected from the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, shortly after he left office in 2014.

The president also confirmed the appointment of Mounir Haliru Gwarzo as the director-general of SEC.

Mr. Gwarzo was appointed on acting capacity shortly after the tenure of the former director-General of the commission, Arunma Oteh, ended last year.

The Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme, NHIS, Femi Thomas, was however, not lucky as he was sacked by the president.

Mr. Abati announced the appointment of Olufemi Akingbade as the acting Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the agency.
