Akwa Ibom stadium to host Nigeria-Brazil friendly

The new ultra-modern stadium in Uyo was commissioned on Friday evening by President Goodluck Jonathan amidst pomp and celebration.

President Goodluck Jonathan, on Friday, commissioned the new 30,000 seats ultra-modern Akwa Ibom International Stadium in Uyo

He was assisted by neighbouring west African presidents - Ghana's John Dramani Mahama and Ivory Coast's Alassane Ouattara alongside host governor Godswill Akpabio.


Governor Akpabio showcased the new sporting edifice which has a bullet–proof State Box which has 70 seats. It is modeled in outlook after Johannesburg’s Soccercity and Bayern Munich’s Alianz Arena.

In his address at the commissioning, Akpabio announced that they will host an international friendly between Nigeria and Brazil on March 29, 2015.

The stadium is already approved by Caf to host the final 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying game between Nigeria and South Africa on 19 November, 2014.

The stadium was commissioned amidst much pomp and celebration with brass bands, march pasts and big music acts Mavin, Kcee and Mish.

The Super Eagles’ B Team took on Ghana’s U23 side in the first game to be played at the grounds.
