Arsene Wenger targets Chelsea revenge

Arsene Wenger is out for revenge when he takes his Arsenal side to face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

The Gunners were thumped 6-0 when the two teams met last season with Samuel Eto’o, Andre Schurrle, Eden Hazard, Oscar – twice – and Mohamed Salah all scoring for the Blues to make Wenger’s 1000th game in charge one to forget.

The will renew rivalry on Sunday with Chelsea looking to maintain their unbeaten start to the season, but Arsenal travel to Stamford Bridge on the back of an impressive 4-1 win over Galatasaray in the Champions League and Wenger is confident his team can gain revenge.

“Last year’s slow start exposed us to counter-attacks. It was a very bad memory but football is not made of history, it’s performance,” Wenger told reporters at his pre-match press conference.

“Chelsea was a horrendous day last season. We have an opportunity to put that right and I’m confident we can take it.

“Football is not made of history, football is made of performance and it is the next game that counts.”

Wenger has failed to beat Chelsea counterpart Jose Mourinho in 11 meetings and last year the Portuguese coach branded his rival a ‘specialist in failure’.

The subject was raised during his press conference but the Frenchman was quick to play down the rivalry between the two managers.

“He has always had fantastic teams. It’s not a game between two managers, it’s a game about clubs,” he declared.
