Enugu State Assembly begins impeachment proceeding against Deputy Governor, Sunday Onyebuchi

The Enugu State House of Assembly on Tuesday commenced impeachment proceedings against the deputy governor of the state, Sunday Onyebuchi.

At its plenary session, the 22-member House dominated by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, directed its Clerk to serve impeachment notice on the deputy governor.

It was learnt that 20 out of the 22 lawmakers have already signed the impeachment notice.

Although details of the plot to remove Mr. Onyebuchi from office are still sketchy, the governor, Sullivan Chime is believed to be behind it.

Mr. Chime is allegedly opposed to the plan by his deputy to contest the Enugu East Senatorial election next year.

The governor is believed to be supporting his Chief of Staff, Ifeoma Nwobodo, for the position currently occupied by Gilbert Nnaji.

There has been no love lost between the governor and his deputy since the former returned from his medical trip in February 2013.

One of the areas of disagreement was the allegation by the governor that Mr. Onyebuchi plotted to remove Ms. Nwobodo while he was on the trip.

On Monday, the Ebonyi State House of Assembly impeached its Speaker, Chukwuma Nwazunku while the Adamawa State House of Assembly removed the state governor, Murtala Nyako last Tuesday.
