56-year-old man arraigned for serially raping a 13-year-old girl for 4 years!

A 56-year-old man, Chukwudi Anonike, has been arraigned before an Ebute Meta Magistrate’s Court, Lagos State, for allegedly raping a 13-year-old girl (names withheld) for a period of four years.

Anonike, who lives in the same compound with the victim, was said to have raped the victim from 2009 to November 2013 when it was detected.

It was learnt that the minor was staying with her aunt on Ola Street, Ikotun area of the state, and was a regular visitor to the defendant’s room.

It was alleged that anytime she visited, Anonike would have sex with her.

The police told the court that the rape was on a “regular basis.”

On November 2, 2014 when the rape was discovered, the victim’s aunt was said to have observed that she was weak after coming out from the defendant’s room.

She was said to have taken her to the hospital, where it was discovered she had been a victim of prolonged sexual assault.

The victim reportedly confessed that the defendant had been sleeping with her since 2009.

The police said the sexual intercourse caused damage to the girl’s private part.

Anonike was subsequently arrested and arraigned on one count of rape.

The charge read, “That you, Chukwudi Anonike, between the year 2009 to November 2, 2013, on regular basis, at No 3, Ola Street, Abaranje Ikotun, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did have unlawful sexual intercourse with a child by name (names withheld), aged 13 years, which caused her harm.”

The police prosecutor, Inspector Richard Odige, said the offence was punishable under Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2011.

The defendant said he was not guilty of the offence.

The defence counsel pleaded for his bail in liberal terms.

The magistrate, Mrs A. A. Demi-Ajayi, admitted him to bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties each in like sum.

The matter was adjourned till January 15, 2014.
