Luis Suarez denies saying he wants to stay at Liverpool

Luis Suarez has denied reports which claimed that he had decided to stay at Liverpool.

Suarez has made no secret of his desire to leave Anfield this summer but he may not get his wish if the Reds remain firm in their desire to keep hold of the striker.

Despite accusing the club of breaking promises by refusing to let him leave, the 26-year-old appeared to have done a sudden u-turn on Wednesday when it emerged that he had said he was prepared to stay due to the affection shown to him by supporters.

“For now, because of all the affection of the people, I will be staying,” Suarez is quoted as saying by Uruguayan newspaper El Observador.

Leading GolTV Latin America journalist, Martin Charquero later tweeted: “Luis Suarez confirms to me that he will not leave Liverpool. The support of the fans in recent weeks influenced his decision.

“Suarez sees it as likely that he’ll sign a renewal (extension) to the contract that binds him to Liverpool.”

However, Suarez insists that he has not had a change of heart and has made it clear that the quotes did not come from him.

“I didn’t say that, maybe someone else did and the main thing is that I am here now with the national team,” Suarez is quoted to have said by Japan’s Kyodo News following Uruguay’s 4-2 win over Japan.

The Suarez that took to the pitch at the Miyagi Stadium was vastly different from the one that has lined out for Liverpool in recent weeks.

Forced to train alone since accusing the club of betraying him, Suarez looked far happier to be among his international team-mates and it showed in his performance as he set up Diego Forlan for the opener before adding his own in the 52nd minute.

He is due to report back to Liverpool on Friday but will not play any part in Saturday’s Premier League opener against Stoke due to his ongoing suspension for biting Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic.
