Arsenal, the bragged £70m transfer warchest and the quiet transfer activity!

Despite Ivan Gazidis bragging about Arsenal's strong financial position, the club are yet to makes any inlands in this summer's transfer market.

Their only signing comes in the form of a free transfer for the injury-prone and relatively unknown French striker Yaya Sanogo

It isn't as if they haven't been trying, however. Arsene Wenger's infamous stubbornness and last minute change of mind was the only thing preventing a deal for Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain going through.

Arsenal were also thought to be the front runners for Stevan Jovetic before a high asking price scared Wenger off.

Despite losing out on Higuain and Jovetic, Arsenal are still being linked with many high-profile players, most notably Luis Suarez.

With Liverpool recently rejecting two bids for their star striker, both of them breaking Arsenal's current transfer record comfortably. With a reported transfer kitty in excess of £70 million, it is clear that Arsenal have the kind of transfer muscle that they had lacked in previous windows.

However, with a successful tour of Asia, especially for French striker Olivier Giroud, Wenger may have reassessed his desire to sign a new striker, claiming that 'he is prepared to wait' in order to sign Luis Suarez.

Having recently claimed that no transfer is close to completion for the Gunners, Wenger has made it clear that he will not throw away the money he has in order to just sign big name players.

Wenger asserted after their recent win against Japanese outfit Urawa Reds that Arsenal will not sign a big name player in order to appease the media but would only do so if he believes that it will improve the quality of the squad.

The Frenchman said: "What we want is not a name but a good player. The name is less important. What is more important is the quality of the player. At the moment I must tell you we are not close to signing anybody."

Notorious for sticking to his current squad of players rather than replacing them, Wenger has had his faith rewarded countless times but has also seen this tactic backfire with players such as Nicklas Bendtner and Denilson.

Wenger may continue with this trend of his, when he also claimed that his current squad is good enough to challenge for titles next season, once again underlining the importance of developing the players he already has.

"With or without additions we can be title challengers next season. Of course we want to do as many top players as we can, but we also have to focus on the players we have and develop them," the Arsenal boss recently stated to the press.
