Democracy Day in Nigeria: Democracy or demoCRAZY?

Democracy Day, a holiday held annually on 29 May to commemorate the return of democracy in Nigeria on May 29, 1999 when Olusegun Obasanjo took office as President of after 16 years of military rule.

Democracy Day is expected to be important to Nigerians as the day every citizen gained the right to speak, the day people stopped living in fear and were free from the rule of the gun.

But 14 years after, democracy day is irrelevant to most Nigerian as dividends of democracy are still elusive in my candid opinion.

Democracy is a form of government in which all eligible citizens have an equal say in the decisions that affect their lives.

Democracy allows eligible citizens to participate equally—either directly or through elected representatives—in the proposal, development, and creation of laws.
Sadly the reverse is the case in Nigeria where we practice "government of a few by a few and for a few" with no regard for stewardship and accountability - in my opinion.

We can only hope and pray for a better Nigeria, as the saying goes: "Rome is not built in a day".

  2. the only way to curb our corrupt leaders and politicians is strict and severe punishment for embezzlers! like death sentence for any embezzlement above 1million Naira and 40yrs jail for any below 1million.
