Speculation grows over Wayne Rooney’s future at Manchester United
Wayne Rooney’s future at Manchester United is the subject of much speculation in Thursday’s newspapers with many reports suggesting he will be allowed to leave in the summer.
Rooney was a surprise absentee from United’s Champions League starting line-up against Real Madrid on Tuesday night, with Sir Alex Ferguson claiming it was purely for tactical reasons.
He was eventually brought on in the wake of Nani’s dismissal but United’s performance before his introduction appeared to justify Ferguson’s decision to drop him and his future at the club could now be in jeopardy.
The 27-year-old has two years to run on his contract and several of Thursday’s newspapers have suggested that United are willing to accept a reduced fee for the England international.
United parted with £30million to sign Rooney from Everton nine years ago but they could be willing to accept up to £25m for the player.
Ex-England and United striker Michael Owen said: “For Rooney not to start on Tuesday was a real kick in the teeth.”
Rooney, who has scored 140 goals in 271 games for United, is no longer the main striking option at the club with the arrival of Robin van Persie.
And Fergie now believes Danny Welbeck could be a better partner for the Dutchman.
