Nigel Adkins confirmed as Reading manager

Nigel Adkins is back in football management after being confirmed as the new boss of Premier League strugglers Reading.

Adkins guided Southampton into the Premier League after back-to-back promotions, but he was sacked by the Saints in January and has been out of management since.

He was first linked with Reading following Brian McDermott’s dismissal two weeks ago and speculation regarding his future intensified on Monday with many reports suggesting he was on the verge of taking over at the Madejski Stadium.

Adkins first ventured into management with Scunthorpe in 2006 before leaving to join Southampton in 2010.

Brighton’s Gus Poyet was heavily linked with the Royals last week but Adkins has been confirmed as McDermott’s successor with the 48-year-old set to take the reins in time for the trip to Arsenal on Saturday.
