20 Boko Haram members killed in attempted attack on military base in Maiduguri
About 20 members of the Boko Haram sect were killed Sunday after the militants attempted to attack a military barracks at Monguno, 200 kilometers away from Maiduguri, the state capital, the military Joint Task Force, Operation Restore Order, in Borno state said.
A spokesperson for the force, Sagir Musa, said the attackers engaged a combined team of joint security team in a fierce gun battle outside the barracks.
“The encounter led to the death of 20 Boko Haram Terrorists, 3 four wheel vehicles and 8 motor cycles used by the terrorists were also destroyed,” Mr. Musa said.
He also said items recovered from the attackers include seven AK47 Rifles, 10 Rocket Propelled Grenade, two RPG Tubes, large quantity of assorted ammunitions and eight assorted magazines.
Separately, Mr. Musa said a special operation based on intelligence resulted in the arrest of two high profile commanders of the group who were responsible for the explosions in Maiduguri on Thursday 28 February, 2013 during the meeting of eight governors of the newly formed All Progressives Congress, APC in the state.
Mr. Musa said those arrested are in JTF custody undergoing interrogation.
