Chelsea midfielder Oriol Romeu out for 6 months with knee injury

Chelsea have confirmed midfielder Oriol Romeu will miss the remainder of the season after undergoing surgery on a cruciate ligament injury.

Romeu was injured in the first half of Chelsea’s win at Sunderland on Saturday but it was hoped he would be able to join up with the Blues squad in Japan for the Club World Cup, but scans confirmed he suffered damage to his cruciate ligament.

He has since had anterior cruciate reconstruction surgery as well as a medial meniscus repair, which will see the midfielder sidelined until at least May.

As a result the 21-year-old, who has made nine appearances for Chelsea in all competitions this season, will miss the remainder of the season.

George Saville, who was not in the original squad submitted for the Club World Cup, has been called up in place of Romeu.
