Liverpool striker Fabio Borini suffered broken foot injury on international duty

Liverpool striker Fabio Borini has fractured his right foot while on international duty with Italy.

Borini was training with the Under-21 side ahead of Friday’s European Championship qualifier clash with Sweden when he suffered the injury.

He was sent for an MRI scan which revealed the extent of the injury, although it is unclear how long he will be out of action for.

The news will be a major blow to Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers with Luis Suarez the only recognised striker in the Reds squad.

Borini moved to Anfield in the summer and scored on his home debut in the 3-0 Europa League qualifier against FC Gomel, but he has yet to find the net since.

Rodgers will be hoping Suarez can stay injury free ahead of the Premier League game against Reading on October 20.
