Tottenham joined the race to sign Dimitar Berbatov?!

Sir Alex Ferguson has cast doubt on Dimitar Berbatov's move to Fulham by suggesting the frontman could be bound for Tottenham instead.

The Manchester United manager said at his weekly press conference on Friday morning: 'It wouldn't surprise me if he's at Tottenham. i don't think he's certain to go to Fulham.'

He added: 'I just have no idea where he is. I don't think it's settled with Fulham, put it that way.'

His comments have poured cold water on Fulham manager Martin Jol's claims on Thursday that Berbatov was set to sign for £5m.

Jol had hailed the signing as the 'biggest in the club's history' as the Bulgarian had rejected offers from Juventus and Fiorentina to work under his former Tottenham boss.

If Ferguson's comments are true, it will add insult to injury for Fulham fans, who have seen Mousa Dembele leave for White Hart Lane for £15m this week.

Berbatov’s decision to remain in England did not go down well with Fiorentina or Juventus, who both believed they had struck agreements with the striker.

Juventus director general Beppe Marotta said on Thursday: ‘Berbatov certainly did not make a good impression on anyone and it was an unprofessional way to behave, so we agree with Fiorentina that it’s best he didn’t come here.’
