Manchester City agrees £18m fee for Benfica midfielder Javi Garcia.

Manchester City have agreed an £18million fee with Benfica for midfielder Javi Garcia.

The Premier League champions will pay the Portuguese giants £15.5m up front and a further £2.5m in add-ons after finalising the terms of the deal on Friday afternoon.

It is understood that City were unwilling to meet Benfica's £24m release clause but the terms of the deal have now been agreed and the Spain international should complete his switch to Etihad Stadium by the transfer deadline.

Garcia's arrival will cap a frantic day of spending for Roberto Mancini, who has already completed deals to sign Scott Sinclair from Swansea City and Richard Wright, and is closing in on the capture of Maicon from Inter Milan.

Garcia, 25, is set to complete a medical before becoming the latest big-money arrival at Etihad Stadium.

The versatile Spaniard, who can either anchor the midfield or fill in as a central defender, will help fill the gap left by the departure of Nigel De Jong, who, as revealed by Goal.com, has joined AC Milan.

City moved for Garcia after failing in their bid to persuade top midfield target Daniele De Rossi to leave Roma and losing out to Bayern Munich in the race for Javi Martinez.
