Liverpool battles Arsenal for Nuri Sahin

Liverpool hope to pip Arsenal to a season-long loan deal for Real Madrid midfielder Nuri Sahin, 23.

The Turkey international flopped during his first season in Spain after his move from Borussia Dortmund - but Liverpool are determined to add him to their squad.

But they face fierce competition from Arsenal and Sahin's desire to play in the Champions League could be a stumbling block.

The Anfield club are also monitoring Atletico Madrid and Uruguay defender Diego Godin, 26, who may become a Manchester City target if they fail to lure away Daniel Agger.
