Gunmen attack on Church in Kogi claimed 16 lives

Unknown gunmen on Monday night invaded the Deeper Life Church at Otite area in Okene, killed 16 worshipers and wounded many others.

It was learnt that the assailants arrived at the church at about 8:45PM local time, during a late evening church service. They cut off electricity supply and began shooting indiscriminately into the crowd. He said some of the worshipers who tried to escape from the premises were captured and their throats slashed.



The Commander of the Joint Military Task Force in Lokoja, Lt-Col. Gabriel Olorunyomi, confirmed the incident.
He said 15 worshipers died instantly in the attack while another died on the way to the hospital.

The commander said that many injured persons were rushed to hospitals in Lokoja, a distance of 40 minutes driving on the road from Okene.

He said the casualty figure might rise considering that some sustained heavy injuries.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack as yet.
