Schools Fail To Resume In Ogun State
Close to 48 hours after organised labour suspended the nationwide strike over hike in the pump price of petrol, most students in both public and private schools in Ogun State are yet to resume as ordered by the state government.
The few that showed up lamented the high cost of fares. Also, workers including teachers who resumed duties decried the hike in fares as terrible. Similarly, most car owners now use commercial vehicles to go to their places of work.
In Abeokuta, schools like Premier Grammar School, Lafenwa High Schools both in Lafenwa, as well as St.John Anglican High School, Kuto, Reverend Kuti Memorial Grammar School and Nawairu-deen High School, Isabo, recorded very low turn-out of students.
Students blamed the high cost of fares for the inability of their colleagues to turn up. According to Olumide Ayinla, a student of Premier Grammar School, he decided to go to schools because his residence was close to the school. But his friend, Kola Adebona, who lives in Oke-Ilewo, claimed he went through tough times before he getting to to the school. He said: “Initially I spent N140 to and fro, but, now I have already spent N180. I don’t think my parents can cope with this.”
Findings showed that in Sagamu and Ijebu-Ode, high fares forced many of the students to trek, resulting to lateness.
Meanwhile, many filling stations in the state yesterday shut their stations against desperate motorists who besieged their stations for petrol. It was observed that many of the filling stations had notice of “No Fuel” placed at their gates.
