Nationwide Strike Cripples Commercial Activities In Lagos
The nationwide strike declared by labour in Nigeria did not leave Lagos out, as commercial activities all over the commercial city were on Monday paralysed.
Usually bustling areas like the Ikorodu Road, the International Airport Road, Ajao Estate and Mafoluku were on Monday deserted and all forms of economic activities grounded. Even the banks closed their doors to customers and only the Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) were open to customers. Heavy security could be seen around most banks as only customers using ATMs were allowed into the banking premises one after the other.
Markets, eateries and other businesses were also shut down as residents in the state complied with the strike order. Cars and buses could not be seen on roads and most residents were wary of leaving their houses for fear of being attacked by hoodlums.
Although protests were held in various parts of the state, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Yakubu Alkali, confirmed that so far there had been no breakdown of law and order. According to Yakubu, the security situation in the state was very peaceful, and no casualty had been recorded in the protest.
However, reports have it that the police killed one person and wounded three others at Ogba, and four in Mushin. The police officer responsible for the Ogba shooting has allegedly been arrested.
Asked if the police in Lagos were equipped with rubber bullets for the strike, Yakubu said that there was no way the police could use such bullets for now. However, he added that they were carrying live bullets under strict conditions. Yakubu, who said that the police were adequately prepared for the strike, assured Lagosians of the security of their lives and properties.
The commissioner said that the police relied on the public for meaningful information about mischief makers who might want to hijack the situation for their selfish interest.
