Federal Government Denies Shutting Down Blackberry Services Over Subsidy Removal

Federal Government, yesterday, denied shutting down Blackberry services for two weeks over the messages that are being exchanged on the recent deregulation of the downstream sector of the economy.

The Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, in a statement by Director, Public Affairs, Mr. Tony Ojobo, said the Executive Vice-Chairman, Dr. Eugene Juwah, did not meet with any of the chief executive officers of telecom operators in the country.

The statement read: “The attention of Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, has been drawn to information making rounds that NCC had, at a meeting this morning (yesterday), agreed with CEOs of telecommunications networks to shut Blackberry services in order to deny Nigerians the use of that very important social network.

“The management, hereby, states categorically that there was never such a meeting, nor was there ever a resolution to shut Blackberry services. The public is advised to disregard such information.”

The commission urged network operators to continue to provide all telecommunication services, including Blackberry services, without fail.
