Christians in the 19 northern states have condemned the payment of N100 million compensation to the family of late Alhaji Ba Fugu Mohammed, father in-law to Mr. Mohammed Yusuf, late leader of Boko Haram Islamic sect.
They described the development as a veiled support for terrorist activities in the country.
Borno State government, last week, presented two cheques amounting to N100 million to the family of Alhaji Mohammed who was killed by suspected members of the sect for allegedly granting audience to former President Olusegun Obasanjo in Maiduguri last year.
Meanwhile, the state government has defended the payment, saying it was in obedience to a court order.
Borno State Commissioner for Information, Inuwa Bwala, made this clarification in a telephone interview with Vanguard, adding, “The family of the in-laws of late Mohammed Yusuf took the previous government in the state to court and the court awarded them N100 million damages.
“The present government was magnanimous enough to pay the judgement sum because we do not want to continue to drag this matter while the people are suffering.”
