University of Lagos (UNILAG) Honours Four Retired Professors

The Electrical and Electreonics Department of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has honoured four of its former lecturers.

Those honoured include Prof. Christopher C. Okoro, a professor of electrical and electronics engineering and former education commissioner of Imo State, Prof. Claudius O. Awosope, a professor of power systems, as well as Dr. Philip B. Osofisan and Mrs. Roseline Osunrinade, the departmental secretary.

Speaking at the event, the DVC (Management Services) of the university, Prof. Rahamon Adisa Bello, commended the dons for their dedication, selflessness, commitment and service to the university and the nation at large.

“They left a legacy of replicating themselves having trained a lot of PhD holders, who have taken over from them in their specialties and that is the highest legacy any lecturer can leave in academia”, Bello said, adding that in engineering, you don’t only lecture; you also have to be able to practice what you proffer”.

He continued: “In electrical and power engineering, they have made their marks. They are experts and they have done consultancy in various areas to be able to justify what they know in practical engineering”.

Bello also commended the services of Dr. Osofisan, whom he described as a very hard worker who contributed his quota to the growth of the department during his short stint.
He eulogised the departmental secretary, Mrs. Osunrinade describing her as the ‘life wire’ of the department for her hard work and diligence.

According to him, “she served diligently that she was able to set up the department in the way that records are now very easy to retrieve and she made the students happy by attending to them and getting things done properly”. He finally prayed that God will grant them good health so that they will live to enjoy the fruit of their labour.

Also speaking at the occasion, the head, department of electronics and electrical engineering of the institution, Prof. Alex Ike Mowete reckoned that it will be quite difficult for the department to fill in the vacuum created by the retirement of the two professors. Prof. Mowete revealed that the two professors who are both alumnus of the institution and also obtained their higher degrees from the best universities of electrical machines in the United Kingdom were the brightest during their under graduate days and said that their services will be so missed.

He, however, took solace in what he described as ‘fortunate’ the university’s policy, which allows the department to offer them adjunct appointment on a yearly basis so that they can continue to impact the knowledge they have and help in the capacity building effort.

They were finally presented with plaques and other gift items and Prof. Mowete finally thanked God for sparing their lives for them to say this token of appreciation for the services they rendered to the institution.
