School Principal And Staff Held Hostage By Angry Parents!
A school principal and several teachers were held hostage for several hours by a group of parents demanding the dismissal of a teacher in a southern French town.
The stand-off, which ended today, was sparked Tuesday evening (local time) when 15 parents stormed Notre-Dame de Caderot school in Berre l'Etang and barricaded themselves in the building with the headmistress, an administrator and three teachers, Le Figaro Daily reported.
"I acknowledge that there are problems, they are not heard by the academic authorities, so they decided to kidnap me with three teachers," Christine Courtot, director of the institution, said.
The irate parents wanted one of the teachers, a trainee in charge of nine-year-olds, fired.
"We are very worried that the pupils are falling behind in school. We think our children are in danger. That's why we have decided to hold the headmistress and a couple of teachers hostage. We want things to change," one of the parents, Christophe Planes, said.
Police arrived at the school but did not intervene. An Education Ministry spokesman said the dispute had to be resolved between the school administrators and the parents, the Daily Mail reported.
The staff were released Wednesday after authorities agreed to transfer the teacher in question to another school.
It was not known if the parents involved would face any charges.
