Lagos State Government Debunks Outbreak of Epidemics Rumour!
Lagos State Government Thursday, debunked the outbreak of epidemics, which residents of Ikeja and its environs alleged, following the collapse of a massive fish storage facility owned by an Indian company, Haano Industries Limited situated along Oba Akran Road.
The state Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Tunji Bello, allayed residents’ fear during a visit to the site alongside the State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) General Manager, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu and his State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) counterpart, Mr. Ademola Shabi.
A team of high-profile state officials inspected the storage facility, which collapsed on November 28 arising from different complaints and petitions directed to Governor Babatunde Fashola (SAN) complaining about the outbreaks of epidemics and that dead bodies might be under the rubies.
Speaking during the inspection, Bello, who was accompanied by Special Adviser on Environment, Dr. Taofeek Folami; and Permanent Secretary in the Office of Environment, Dr. Titilayo Anibaba, said the experts’ advice revealed that the residents in the area “are not endangered in anyway”.
Bello explained that such strategic environment-related agencies as LASEMA, LASEPA, LAWMA, LASPEDA and the Ministry of Health, conducted examination on the collapsed building and the entire environment was completely fumigated to prevent outbreaks of epidemics.
He said there “was no case of death as a result of the building collapse. Only four persons were injured, all of whom are responding to treatment in the hospital. On this note, there is no way there will still be dead bodies under the rubies of the collapsed building.”
Speaking further, he said: “If there is outbreak of epidemics, I will not be here today. The building is used for fish storage facility. After its collapse, it is the odour of decaying fish products that people perceived, thereby concluding that there is outbreaks of epidemics.
There is no outbreak of epidemics in Lagos.
“We have taken over the building. No person is covering anything here. We have started investigating what led to the collapse. People should rely on information from the government. There is no need to raise unnecessary alarms. We must stop misinforming people.”
At the inspection too, Oke-Osanyintolu further provided details about steps, which he confirmed, the state government had taken to forestall outbreaks of epidemics that might result from the fish storage facility, which partially collapsed at the early hour of November 28.
According to him, we have conducted all medical tests. We have also fumigated the entire building. And LAWMA has removed the decayed fish products from the rubies. People are no endangered. Everywhere is safe for people to move around and do their work.
We are on the top of the situation to ensure that things are done appropriately and properly.
