Rainstorm destroys 56 houses in Kogi

Rainstorm has destroyed 56 houses and foodstuff valued at over N15 million in Ankpa, Kogi State.

Alhaji Abdullahi Bako, a director in Ankpa Local Council, said this on Tuesday in Ankpa when a special committee, set up by Kogi State government to assess the extent of damage by the two-hour downpour, visited the area. Bako said the storm, which occurred on Saturday, affected over 1,000 residents, especially those living on Otukpo Road, former Eje Palace, the township stadium, Government Lodge and Owelle area of the town.

He said the storm also destroyed Power Holding Company of Nigeria, PHCN’s installations, and that the area had been in darkness since then. Alhaji Abdullahi Umar, Onu of Ankpa, whose palace was also affected, called for urgent attention to resettle those whose houses were completely destroyed.

Malam Yusuf Egah, the chairman of the committee, sympathised with the victims and assured them that the state government would come to their aid.
