Muslim group pledges support for any governorship candidate that supports hijab in Lagos schools

An Islamic group, Joint Muslim Forum, has declared that its members would support any Lagos governorship candidate that supports the use of hijab in public schools.

The group stated this on Thursday at a press briefing to react to the judgement of a Lagos High Court that the hijab (female Muslim head covering) is illegal in Lagos school.

Under its “SLOGAN FOR LAGOS 2015: ‘NO HIJAB, NO VOTE”, the group said “the Muslims of Lagos State have no alternative than to use what they have to get what they want.”

“We have resolved to give our votes to any candidate from any political party who is ready to grant us religious freedom,” it said.

The group listed various cases which it described as instances of injustice to female Muslim students in Lagos to present its case.

It also cautioned against the demand that the next Lagos governor, who would emerge in 2015, must be of a particular religion.

“Our stand is that candidates should emerge on the basis of merit and demonstrated capacity and capability to move Lagos State forward and consolidate on the existing level of development,” it said.
