Arsenal target Luiz Gustavo signs for Wolfsburg

Luiz Gustavo has finally dashed Arsenal's hopes of luring him to The Emirates by signing a five-year contract at Wolfsburg.

It was revealed on Thursday that the Bundeslia side were on the verge of winning the race for Bayern Munich's defensive midfielder after holding talks with him.

They have now completed the deal, to deepen to gloom over Arsenal as manager Arsene Wenger continues to see key transfer targets slip through his grasp.

Gustavo will be unveiled at a press conference later on Friday and is hoping to earn a spot in his country's World Cup squad for next summer, goes straight into the Wolfsburg squad for their Bundesliga clash with Schalke tomorrow.

Wenger had identified Gustavo, 26, as the midfield enforcer he needs weeks ago and is desperately hoping to see off competition from Wolfsburg and Rafa Benitez's Napoli for his signature.

It has been a frustrating summer so far for Arsenal and Wenger, who is desperate to prise Luis Suarez away from Liverpool and is becoming increasingly anxious about landing the recruits he needs to convince the sceptics Arsenal are ready to challenge for the title.

The Gunners were at advanced stages in negotiations over a move for former Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain. But a deal for the Argentinian collapsed and Higuain moved to Napoli in a £34.5million move.
