ACN holds last convention, adopts merger party APC
The over 5,000 delegates at the convention of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) on Thursday officially approved the merger of the party with three others to form the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The delegates also approved the retention of the broom symbol as the APC symbol at the party’s national convention at the Onikan Stadium in Lagos.
The congress also approved the expulsion of an ACN member from Kaduna State.
“Some alliances in the past only facilitated corruption; they were a rape to democracy. This is the day when we shall witness the first instalment of the consummation of the merger started last February,” said Lawal Shuaibu, Chairman of the Convention Committee.
In his opening address, National Chairman of the ACN, Chief Bisi Akande said “this convention is a special one. The urgent need for change as the country desires to rescue our country compelled us to provide an alternative leadership for Nigeria. We must not entertain any fear or surrender to blackmail. We must be mindful that merger is new in Nigeria.
Lending his voice, national leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu urged Nigerians to be part of history just as he predicted that a political storm is brewing in the country.
The All Progressive Congress is formed by the merger of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) led by former Head of State, General Muhammad Buhari (rtd), All Nigeria Peoples’ Party (ANPP) led by first Civilian Governor of Abia State, Ogbonnaya Onu, Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) led by Bola Ahmed Tinubu and a faction of All Progressive Peoples’ Alliance (APGA) led by the Governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha.
