Lagos state warns owners of defective and uncompleted buildings
Owners of defective buildings in Lagos State, whose houses had been marked for demolition have been warned to undertake the demolition themselves as government intervention could be costlier and might even lead to tougher sanctions.
Also, owners of structures under construction have been warned not to rent out such buildings in hurry. Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Mr. Olutoyin Ayinde, who handed down the warning, said his ministry had concluded updating its record and would soon publish a list of identified structures marked for demolition by the state government, after which owners would be given less than 48 hours to do the right thing.
Ayinde stated this while receiving management of International Energy Insurance Plc, who paid him familiarization. He said the measure became necessary in view of the number of buildings that had been identified and marked for demolition, as some owners of such buildings remained adamant and still went ahead to rent out such buildings to unsuspecting members of the public, either for residential or commercial purposes.
Ayinde noted that the last building that collapsed which occurred on the Lagos Island was due to the stubbornness of some erring traders, who disobeyed government’s order by trading inside the buildings, which had been marked and sealed.
