Lagos To Give Mass Burial To Unclaimed Corpse At Isolo Mortuary
The Lagos State Government is to give mass burial to unclaimed and unidentified corpses at the Isolo General Hospital Mortuary as it plans to decongest the mortuary.
Affected corpses are those that have been lying at the morgue for a period of three months or more as a result of motor accident, ritual killings, among others. Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris who made this known in Lagos noted that the mass burial of the unclaimed corpses became necessary to allow for their proper burial before they decomposed and in line with the belief that dead bodies must be treated with dignity and respect.
“This is why we wish to inform the general public that all unclaimed and unidentified corpses in the mortuary for a period of three months or more will be given mass burial on Friday, 28 October, 2011.” He urged members of the public to kindly check the Isolo Mortuary to identify and claim their missing or dead loved ones and arrange for their burial before the scheduled date.
The commissioner, while reiterating the commitment of the state government at ensuring a healthy environment, urged members of the public to always observe and maintain a strict personal and environmental hygiene, stressing that this is one of the ways diseases can be prevented.
“There is also the need for members of the public to avoid indiscriminate disposal or dumping of refuse into drainages, canals and waterways. Clearing of drains in front of their houses, safe disposal of human wastes and observing of the monthly environmental sanitation exercise will also go a long way in ensuring a healthy and hygienic environment and prevent outbreak of communicable diseases,” he said.
