Edo State Government shut down nine privately owned schools

The Edo Government on Tuesday ordered the closure of nine privately owned schools for operating illegally in Benin metropolis.

The state commissioner for Education, Mr. Ekpenisi Omorotiomwan led the inspection team that closed down the affected institutions on Tuesday. The schools were Rhema Montessori School, Martins Schools, Intercessory Bible College, Tunlad Education Centre, Isekhure Royal Performing Arts and First African Church Nursery and schools. Others included Blossom Nursery school, Reverend Lillian Johnson Memorial Anglican Grammar school and Rachael Primary School, all in Benin.

Omorotiomwan explained that the schools were closed down because they did not meet government's standard for qualitative education in the state. He said: "As you can see, the structures are defective. They operate in an environment not conducive for learning. They lack the pre-requisite for adequate academic activities. They don't operate legally in the state. They just print on papers that they are government approved. More schools will be closed down."

Omorotiomwan said the schools would remain shut until they meet the requirements of the state government, hinting that the exercise would be extended to other parts of the state.
